These baskets represent the hard work that went into carving a living out of the Appalachian soil. Baskets gathered produce from the fields and orchards and berries on the hillsides. Baskets went to market, carrying home heavy loads of goods.

Hearth Baskets

Hearth baskets have traditionally been used to keep kindling next to the fireplace.

They have an unusual stepped up side that allows the basket to hold long sticks of kindling easily. Nowadays, they are used to keep newspapers and magazines neat and accessible.

Berry and Gathering Baskets

Baskets were used to gather berries or crops from the fields and hillsides. A fancy berry basket can be an attractive catchall on your dresser, or a simple one can be used to carry items around. These handsome baskets can be as plain or fancy as you like.

Basket Care Tips
Baskets are made from natural materials, and need a certain amount of care to maintain their looks and usefulness.
....Although they are sturdy, don't overload them.
....Baskets need a certain amount of moisture, but don't let them stay in a damp area.
....Mist very lightly once a year or so.
....Keep out of direct sunlight to prevent fading.
....Keep them free of dust and dirt.
....Protect the basket from grease and food by lining with a napkin.
